You probably know that with the help of a prism you can separate white light in the different colors of the rainbow. Light is an electromagnetic wave and the different colors are electromagnetic waves with a different wavelength, which are broken (change direction) the moment they enter the glass of the prism and leave it again. We call this refraction. It results in the different colors of the rainbow.
A prism produces the different colors of the rainbow, because the white light enters the prism glass and leaves it again and is broken. In the case of the suncatcher, another process takes place.
A layer of very thin lines has been applied to the suncatcher. This creates a grid with very thin gaps. When you shine light on that grid, it is partly reflected and partly falls through. The light that goes through the narrow slits actually bends around the thin lines. Interference of the different wavelengths creates a pattern with the different colors. We call this diffraction. The light that is reflected bounces on the thin lines. The different wavelengths are each reflected at a different angle and depending on your position with respect to the grid, another color will reach your eye. We call this reflective diffraction.
Only if you hang the Rainbow Maker in direct sunlight in the window, it works as a Holographic Suncatcher and will it sparkle like a big crystal. After a while, will by the warmth of the sun and/or a little draught the Rainbow Maker go spinning around, making the Rainbows dance through your room. (patented 2017).
